Adoption Referral - What to ask the Adoption Agency

  1. Is the agency licensed by the State?
  2. What types of children are available through the agency (age, nationality, handicaps, race, local, interstate, international)? How many children were placed last year? How many of the type in which I am interested?
  3. Approximately how many qualified adoptive couples are waiting for a baby at this time?
  4. What are the criteria for screening potential adoptive parents? Are there any restrictions on who can apply to adopt through the agency?
  5. How and when is the Home Study done? How soon after we apply will our Home Study begin? How long will it take to complete? What paperwork will I need to complete? Are there any educational requirements or groups I will need to participate in? What is the average waiting time after the Home Study before placement?
  6. What services does the agency provide? (Counseling couples, counseling birthparent(s), legal work, medical care, education classes for adoptive parents, foster care for the baby, Home Studies, Post Placement supervision). If yes, is an extra fee charged?
  7. What do the adoptive parent fees cover? Will there be other fees involved? If yes, what are they? (long distance phone calls, mileage, federal express, document authentication, etc.) Is there a fee schedule available? Are there fees for birthparents?
  8. Does the agency place a child in foster care before final relinquishment by the birthparents?
  9. Will the agency consider placing the child with the adoptive parents before termination of rights by the birthparents?
  10. What is the agency's approach towards openness in adoption? What if the parties wish to meet or to have continuing contact of some kind?
  11. From where are birthmothers recruited?
  12. What is the initial intake process for the birthparents?
  13. How are adoptive parents chosen for the child?
  14. Does the agency place special needs children?
  15. What are the unique features of the agency? Is it possible to talk with families who have adopted through your agency?
